Companies looking for ways to cut health care costs are increasingly investing in health coaching programs. Offered as part of a benefits package, health coaching gives employees regular counseling by phone or the Internet to help them quit smoking, lose weight, train for a marathon or go vegetarian.
Functional fitness is expected to take off in 2007, according to those in the health and fitness industry. The term refers to strength training that's used to make daily activities easier through focusing on balance, coordination and endurance. Exercises might target building arm strength to help people lift groceries or laundry baskets. For people with desk jobs, a functional fitness exercise program would focus on building core muscles.
Rather than focus on one group of muscles, gym goers may take on routines that work their whole bodies. By utilizing BOSU, medicine and stability balls in your 30 minute workout routine, balance and strength increases.
Within the diet industry, are planning to teach consumers about diet and fitness through campaigns focused on education about portion control and long-term weight management. The number of maintenance programs, which help consumers ease into buying and making their own food after reaching their goal weights, are also expected to grow this year.
In a survey of health and fitness industry professionals about trends they foresee in 2007, fitness programs for boomers nearly topped the list. Though this generation is getting older, they are committed to staying active. Fitness clubs and retirement communities are now expected to start targeting the group with specialized classes, says survey author Walter R. Thompson.
Restaurants are going to begin heeding the advice of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2007, serving low-calorie and reduced-fat meals, according to Robin Steagall, a registered dietician and nutrition communications manager of the Calorie Control Council. She also expects large chains to begin displaying nutritional information before it's required by law, as it is in New York City.
